It sounds as if the teeth on the zipper are not locking like they should. The zipper will need to be replaced.

How does one shorten a long reversible zipper into a short one. I have a granddaughter that needs a zipper replaced, it's 15" and reversible. I have already placed an order from your company, but I'm not quite sure just how to shorten the zipper. Can you please help me with this or guide me to who can help me. I sure would appreciate it. Thank you.

To shorten, you would need to shorten this from the top. The top of the zipper would need to be secured at the top with a top stop or sewn into fabric to prevent the slider from falling off.

I’ve been getting a lot of complaints about the #5 sliders not fitting into zippers. Do you know what’s happening? Are the sliders defective?

A:
There may be some confusion about what slider to use for the zipper in question. The #5 new style plastic (ZS5N*) and the #5 old style plastic (ZS5V*) are not compatible and of course, the #5 Nylon Coil sliders (ZS5C) won’t work on a #5 Molded Plastic Zipper (old or new). Metal sliders also will not work with plastic and vice versa.

My plastic zippers are melting when I press the garment on our hot head press.

A:
On a laundry hot head press the heads are locked down for several minutes and there is not always an easy way to avoid pressing the zippers on laundered items. When finishing a garment it is suggested the zippers be positioned off the edge of the press. This way, the hot head will not rest directly on the zipper. If this is not possible, place some type of cover over the zipper. A folded handkerchief or piece of flannel from a press pad will help minimize the chances of a melted zipper.

How do I make a zipper shorter?

A:
First you must determine whether you are shortening a separating or a non-separating zipper. To shorten a separating zipper, work the slider to the bottom of the zipper. Using needle nose pliers, remove the 2 top stops. Using end nippers, shorten the zipper to the desired size by making a small cut between the teeth or across the coils on both sides of the zipper. Remove the excess zipper tape with scissors. Apply two new top stops and sew zipper into the article of clothing. To shorten a non-separating zipper, work the slider to the top of the zipper. Can I turn a reversible jacket zipper into a non-reversible zipper? I need to replace the slider, and can I just buy a bottom stop and crimp it on to make this a non-separating zipper.

A:
The slider can be changed from a reversible to a non-reversible and vice versa. You would take off the top stop off the zipper to take off the slider. To make the zipper a non-separating zipper, the bottom lock box and leg would need to be taken off and a bottom stop could be crimped on, or the end of the zipper could be secured in fabric so the slider doesn’t fall off the chain.
