Thimbles for Smooth Hand Sewing

Thimbles for Smooth Hand Sewing

We know that hand sewing takes time, and how important it is to make sure you have the right tools to do so quickly and comfortably. A must-have for every hand sewer, a Sewing Thimble is the tool to do just that. Thimbles are usually worn on the middle finger to push the needle through the fabric—doing so allows you to hand sew more quickly and with more dexterity and control. Choose from a variety of thimbles and finger shields, including Leather Thimbles, Metal Thimbles, or Plastic Thimbles, to help you create your best work yet.

Styles of Sewing Thimbles

Metal Sewing Thimbles

The Strongest Sewing Thimbles

Metal Thimbles are rigid and durable, great for hand sewing heavier fabrics and leather or vinyl. Available in Brass or Nickel-Plated Brass. Choose from open and closed styles.

Leather Sewing Thimbles

Sewing Thimbles with a Natural Fit

Leather Thimbles are durable yet flexible, and will mold to the shape of your finger over time for a more natural and comfortable fit. Choose from open and closed styles.

Plastic Rubber Sewing Thimbles

Flexible and Gentle Sewing Thimbles

Plastic Thimbles are the most flexible material, suited for hand sewing on light and medium materials. Available in several distinct styles for extra control and flexibility.

Open vs Closed Thimbles

Open vs. Closed Sewing Thimbles

What is the difference between a closed and open thimble? Closed thimbles have a closed top, meaning they cover the whole fingertip. Closed Thimbles give the advantage of extra protection of the fingertip, and more of the middle finger can be used to push the needle through fabric. Open Thimbles, also known as Tailor’s Thimbles, have an opening in the top which leaves the fingertip exposed, giving the wearer a bit more control and ability to manipulate fabric with the middle finger. The open top also prevents perspiration from collecting in the thimble when sewing for long periods of time. Closed and open thimbles are available in multiple different materials, so you can choose the right style of sewing thimble for your hand sewing style.

What is the difference between a size 5 and a small? I have a size 7 and it's a bit large. I can use it, but am frequently stopping to push it back on.

How do you use a thimble?

A:
A thimble is traditionally worn on the middle finger of your sewing hand. If you find that you naturally want to push the needle with your index finger, go ahead and make the switch. You want to work in a manner that is most comfortable for you. The needle eye is pushed through fabric layers with the sides or top of the thimble. Traditional tailors keep their middle finger bent and push the needle with the side of the thimble. Quilters and the general sewist use to the top of the thimble to push the needle through the fabric.

How do you pick the right size Thimble?

A:
A thimble should stay comfortably on your finger. Hang your hand at your side. If the thimble does not fall off, it is a good fit. It also should not be too tight and squeeze your fingertip. It is possible you may need 2 different sizes of thimbles depending on the season. Fingers may swell a little in different temperatures and while sewing.

What is a Thimble?

A:
A thimble is a “pushing tool” worn on the fingertip during hand sewing. They come in a variety of materials from traditional metal to leather, plus soft, conforming plastics. The dimples and grooves on a thimble catch the needle eye and keep it from slipping… Why should you use a thimble? A thimble protects the finger from the eye end of the needle. Pushing a needle through thick layers of fabric is much easier with a thimble. Pulling a needle ... …through fabric layers can be very tiring on your thumb and index finger. Using a thimble is more comfortable and relieves the extra strain on your fingers.

Thimble

Just what I was looking for! I wanted a closed top thimble for when my tailor's thimble wouldn't suffice.
