This is a complicated thing to use. I've tried using it multiple times but for some reason the chalk line won't stick the dresses. Is it the chalk or am I doing it wrong.

CM-1: DELUXE CHALK MARKER by

5.0

Having used all kinds of skirt markers, the CM-1 Deluxe Chalk Hem Marker is my favorite. The base is shaped like an oval, with one side of the oval being flat. This allows the flat side of the base to be held closer to the client's hemline which enables the chalk line to be more accurately placed. I prefer this marker over the CM-2 Chalk Hem Marker because the CM-2 has a tripod base. It is cumbersome and takes more time to adjust the base to get closer to the hemline. The CM-2's base takes more floor space to store than the CM-1. You can slide the legs of the CM-2 up parallel with the shaft when not using it, but the legs tend to flop around. The CM-2 leg's end caps don't always stay in place either. The CM-2 actually costs $5 more than the CM-1.

I also prefer the CM-1 marker over the SM-1 Skirt Marker. I feel the SM-1 is time consuming when having to pin each mark individually. The CM-1 has a bulb which quickly marks the chalk line. There are circumstances where I would prefer a pinned hemline, in lieu of a chalked hemline. Instead of using the SM-1, I merely place the opening edge of the chalk cannister of the CM-1 against the garment where I want the hemline and place a pin. The only disadvantage of the CM-1, in my opinion, is that the slider on the pole eventually loses its "grip" and doesn't stay in place when adjusting different hem heights. BUT, if and when this does happen, it is because you have marked a LOT of hems. If you've done that, you've more than justified the cost of a replacement! A word of caution. When using any chalk marker for a hemline, always pin some of the hem in place and confirm the length with the client before chalking the hemline. This is because if you need to make the hem longer, the chalk does not always come out of the fabric and you wouldn't want it to show.
